Outpost | Isola delle Femmine, Sicily

Outpost look out tower at Isola delle Femmine near Palermo in Sicily

This ruined watch tower, on the northern coast of Sicily at Isola delle Femmine near Palermo, dates from the 16th century. Its position on top of a rocky outcrop and the angle of this photo make it look as isolated as it probably once was, when it is actually now surrounded on three sides by modern houses and holiday villas. On the other side it faces out to the small island which gives Isola delle Femmine its name.

Issue 10 of the fine art photography publication Stark-Magazine features this photograph on a double page spread. The magazine is free to download and printed copies can also be purchased with 25% of profits going to Doctors Without Borders.

Sunrise in Paradise | Komandoo, Maldives

sunrise on the island of komandoo in the maldives

When we stepped off of the Dhoni boat and walked down the jetty onto the resort island of Komadoo in the Maldives, we were greeted with the words “welcome to paradise”. Having spent four days on this idyllic retreat in the northwestern reef of the Lhaviyani Atoll, I can’t disagree with that sentiment! Sunrise and sunset in the Maldives are equally beautiful times of day and, at around 7am, you don’t even have to get up very early to see the sun come up. Walking along the beach from our water villa to reach the spot where I wanted to take this shot, I passed a few reef sharks that had come in near the shore to feed while it was quiet. Other than those and a heron, I had the beach and the sunrise to myself – a very relaxing way to start another day in paradise.

Central Park | New York City

young couple sit by a lake in Central Park Manhattan New York

Another city scene today and this time it’s New York City in the United States of America. This was my first time in New York and was on a business trip a few years ago in February. Walking through Central Park towards the ice rink, I noticed this young couple sitting alone by the lake with the bridge behind, enjoying a bit of winter sun. I thought it was a lovely scene, so I took a few steps off the path and quickly grabbed this shot, before catching up with my friends.

The Anchor | Bankside, London

the anchor at bankside in London with St Paul

After the colourful Oregon sunset of yesterdays post, here is a photo with no colour at all. This black and white shot is of The Anchor, a historic pub beside the Thames at Bankside in London. The recognisable shape in the background is the famous dome of St Paul’s Cathedral on the other side of the river Thames. In 1666, Samuel Pepys sat in the bar of the Anchor as he watched and wrote about the great fire of London. More recent history saw the Anchor featured in the film Mission Impossible, with Tom Cruise seen drinking a beer outside the inn.

Oregon Sunset | Ecola State Park

Sunset at Ecola State Park, Oregon, USA

The view from the headland at Ecola State Park, looking towards Cannon Beach. Ecola State Park is on the Oregon coast in the beautiful Pacific Northwest region of the USA. Ecola State Park was used as a film location for the Twilight movie. We only traveled along a small stretch of the Oregon coastline on this trip, but I saw enough to want to return. The scenery really is breathtaking!
